Asbestos is a bigger problem than we thought

Asbestos is not a single mineral but a group of naturally occurring silicate minerals (3:45). The silica tetrahedra form either curled sheet structures (chrysotile/serpentine) or rigid ladder-like chains (amphiboles like amosite and crocidolite). These structures make asbestos incredibly heat-resistant, durable, and virtually indestructible — properties that made it invaluable for construction but catastrophic for human health.

Henry Ward Johns pioneered mass-produced asbestos roofing in 1868 to prevent urban fires (5:30), and consumption in the US grew from 20,400 tons in 1900 to 803,000 tons in 1973. Asbestos was embedded in virtually every type of building and consumer product, from brake pads to toothpaste to cigarette filters, and likely helped reduce fire-related deaths by approximately 80% during this period.

When inhaled, asbestos fibers lodge deep in lung tissue where macrophages attempt but fail to digest them — a process called "frustrated phagocytosis" (14:30). This triggers chronic inflammation, DNA damage, scarring (asbestosis), and cancers including mesothelioma. Fibers can migrate through the lymphatic system to virtually any organ in the body, causing cancers far beyond the lungs.

Internal documents revealed that companies like Johns-Manville and Raybestos Manhattan knew about asbestos health dangers since the 1930s but actively suppressed research, edited scientific reports, and maintained a policy of not informing workers of their diagnoses (17:00). A Johns-Manville president allegedly stated workers should be left to "work until they dropped dead" to save money.
